For many consumers, supporting eco-friendly products is a top priority. Despite the higher premium that is often paid for organic goods, consumers want to support eco-friendly practices.
Eco-labels, also known as eco-marks, serve as indicators for those who want to support eco-friendly products. An eco-label is placed on a product by a third-party who has researched the manufacturer of the product and its practices to ensure that the product is truly eco-friendly. Rather than standing in the supermarket straining to read the fine print, eco-labels provide a clear indication to buyers who are looking for eco-friendly goods.
Consumers choose to support eco-friendly products because they are concerned with the state of the environment today. There is a large amount of waste around the world. Landfills are overflowing, waterways are polluted, and cancer continues to run rampant. These issues are cause for concern, but consumers realize that they cannot stand about wringing their hands, instead they must act and so they are changing out traditional light bulbs for fluorescent light bulbs, choosing organic meats, eggs, and cheeses in their grocery stores, and looking for clothing that bears an eco-label.
The textile industry produces tons of waste, especially women’s fashions. This is because with clothing so inexpensive, people, young girls in particular, have the liberty of changing clothes as quickly as the styles change. This means that instead of wearing clothing until it has been mended to death and worn thin, perfectly good clothing is being discarded, producing mountains of waste in our landfills. There are people working to redistribute clothing around the world, especially to third world countries, but even with those efforts, clothing is a major waste producer.
The manufacturing of fabric isn’t eco friendly either. From pesticides, to harsh chemicals, to processes that dump waste into our waterways polluting them, clothing manufacturers are not eco-friendly. There are those that are making positive changes in the methods used to manufacture clothing. Using eco-friendly treatments and changing from petroleum dependency to cleaner burning natural gas, these companies deserve recognition for their efforts. Supporting eco-friendly products that proudly display an eco-label is a good way to keep these manufacturers in business.
The law of supply and demand can be used for environmental purposes. If manufacturers see that consumers will only buy eco-labeled products, or if they see that people are willing to pay a higher price in order to help the environment, they will jump on board with eco-friendly practices. Manufacturers want to stay in business, they won’t risk going out of business in order to save the environment. That is why it is up to consumers to support eco-labeled products and to send the message to manufacturers that items manufactured through eco-friendly practices are going to be in demand in the marketplace. Manufacturers may not care about the environment, but they do care about their pocketbooks. Support eco-friendly clothing and manufacturers will scramble to meet the demand.
